FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How much does it cost?

Currently Classes for all students cost £8 per class.

  • Do I need any previous experience?

No. You will train with other beginners, and be closely supervised by the Instructor. You don't even need to be fit before you start!

  • Why is Ving Tsun Kung-Fu the right Martial Art for me?

Ving Tsun Kung-Fu is a complete system, dealing with all possible phases of a fight; kicks, punches, knees and elbows, locks or throws and anti-ground fighting. We also include weapons defence and awareness. You will not be taught to beat an attacker at their own game, rather to use the strength of an opponent against them, and also you will only be taught techniques that are practical, easy to remember and easy to apply.

  • Can I try it before I decide to join?

Of course! You may take an Induction Class or enrol for one of our classes before you decide to join the association. After this you will need to become a member in order to continue training, have full insurance and be able to take gradings.

  • How do I start? Do I just turn up at a class?

Please register for class enrolment before attending your first class.

  • What will I learn in my first lesson?

You will be given some background about the art of Ving Tsun Kung-Fu, be introduced to some of our basic fighting concepts and principles, learn two basic stances, and be trained in the main weapon of our Kung-Fu system, the 'straight-line punch'. Also you will be shown a simple 'street scenario' Self-Defence' application.

  • How often do I need to train?

A new student often begins training once a week, but soon increases their attendance as they see the benefits and potential of the system. Twice a week is therefore recommended to ensure steady progress. A keen beginner may wish to train more often by attending the fitness sessions or booking private lessons. If time does not allow, or you only want to train once a week this is fine, but you cannot expect to grade as often as the more regular students.

  • What do I need to wear?

Simply turn up with a plain white T-Shirt, black jogging pants and training shoes to begin your training! Uniform costs are kept to a minimum. We have Club T-Shirts for sale at £18 which you may wish to purchase after deciding to join the Club. Kung-Fu trousers and other training supplies are available which we offer as a service not a necessity.

  • How long will it take to learn how to defend myself?

Because Ving Tsun is a practical fighting art, not a sport, we believe that we can offer you the fastest way to effective Self-Defence. Every move you will learn has a practical application; in many other systems people spend a long time learning moves that they cannot apply when fighting. You will learn useful techniques that can be applied from 'day one', and can expect to be able to deal with the majority of unarmed attacks in as little as 6 to 12 months.

  • How long will it take me to get my Black Belt?

In Ving Tsun Kung-Fu we do not wear belts, but the equivalent would be the Technician grade that follows the 12 student grades. Obviously it depends on how often you train but a committed student could reach this level in 3-4 years.

  • Is it all about fighting?

No! In fact the true martial artist whilst cultivating an ability to fight, hopes never to apply their skills; becoming a more relaxed, healthier and self-confident person. Other benefits include greater awareness, fitness, flexibility and the enjoyment of participating in a social activity with like minded individuals.

  • Will I get hurt?

Attention is always placed on safety. The goal is for self-improvement and to assist one's partner in perfecting their techniques, not to compete with them. Students can practice with their partner to the level of contact that they are comfortable with and when you choose to 'reality test' your techniques under more pressure, this will be done in a safe controlled environment. As with any contact sport the risk of injury is always there, but if you train with care and respect for your training partner accidents should not occur.

  • Sounds good! What have I got to lose?

Nothing! You will learn a great deal in your first lesson and will have received individual attention, you will not be struggling to follow what the other students are doing. Even if you decide that Ving Tsun Kung-Fu is not for you then you may still take away something valuable from the lesson that you could apply in a conflict situation.
